RICELT: Building an ELT Knowledge Community in Chile

This panel discussion was organised as part of the IATEFL Chile 2014, and it was the launch of RICELT to the ELT community.

Chairs: Dr. Richard Smith & Paula Rebolledo

The empirical knowledge about the ELT reality in Chile is scarce. There is a limited number of papers published in the area, with a consistent evidence of a mismatch between theory and practice. This discussion panel aims at pointing out the relevance of creating a knowledge community in ELT in Chile. It is argued here that this should be based on the local expertise of all the actors involved, namely practitioner teachers, student teachers, novice teachers, school students, academics, and MINEDUC authorities. Programme -RICELT Introduction (5 min) -Discussion activity (25 min): In pairs or groups audience discusses the three questions presented by the mediator. -Panel answers (10 min) -Audience answers (10 min) -Final remarks by Dr. Richard Smith (10 min)

There were around 50 attendees, and the panel involved:
  • Andrea Robles, Practitioner teacher, Champion Teachers
  • Liliana Castillo, Undergraduate student, PUCV
  • Katharina Glas, Academic PUCV
  • Nicolas Araya, Post graduate student, UMCE
  • Alicia Paez, PIAP, MINEDUC
